Beautiful and fragrant, roses have always been a mainstay in gardens and homes. Out of any other flower in the world, these are a constant favorite. In the past, a rose over one’s dinner table meant everything that would pass upon your lips that night must remain secret. From red roses to yellow ones or white, different colors also meant different things: I love you. We’re friends. My sincerest condolences.

It’s no wonder a lot of people want their own rose garden. If you want to get started on your own, here’s what you need to know to choose the best fertilizer for roses:

Do a soil test
This helps you identify what kind of soil you have and what you’ll be working with. This should make it easier on you to plan.

Don’t throw away your banana peels
You can use them as fertilizer. Just smash the peels. Put them at the base of your plants, 4 to 6 inches deep. They’ll be a good source of potassium for your roses.

Use coffee grounds
Roses like soil that’s slightly acidic. You can use coffee grounds to help acidic plants like roses grow and bloom in your garden in no time.

Give fish tank water a try
Your roses might also hugely benefit from a dose of nitrogen. You can provide this with the water from your fish tank. However, only use water from regular fish tank changes. If the water’s already dirty and moldy, that’s not going to be good news for your roses. Don’t use that, warns SF Gate.

Get some organic fertilizer
If you haven’t got any coffee grounds at home or a handy fish tank, best to do it the old-fashioned way: just buy yourself some fertilizers. Read the feeding instructions carefully though.
